چکیده

Spatial sciences are confronted with increasing amounts of high-dimensional data. These data commonly exhibit spatial and temporal dimensions. To explore, extract, and generalize inherent patterns in large spatio-temporal data sets clustering algorithms are indispensable. These clustering algorithms must account for the distinct special properties of space and time in order to outline meaningful clusters in such data sets. Therefore, this research develops a hierarchical method based on self-organizing maps. The hierarchical architecture permits independent modeling of spatial and temporal dependence. To exemplify the utility of the method, this research uses an artificial data set and a socio-economic data set of the Ostregion, Austria, from the years 1961 to 2001. The results for the artificial data set demonstrate that the proposed method produces meaningful clusterings that cannot be achieved when disregarding differences in spatial and temporal dependence. The results for the socio-economic data set show that the proposed method is an effective and powerful tool for analyzing spatio-temporal patterns in a regional context.

Hierarchical Clustering Analysis with SOM Networks

This work presents a neural network model for the clustering analysis of data based on Self Organizing Maps (SOM). The model evolves during the training stage towards a hierarchical structure according to the input requirements. The hierarchical structure symbolizes a specialization tool that provides refinements of the classification process. The structure behaves like a single map with differ...

Using Growing hierarchical self-organizing maps for document classification

The self-organizing map has shown to be a stable neural network model for high-dimensional data analysis. However, its applicability is limited by the fact that some knowledge about the data is required to de ne the size of the network. In this paper we present the Growing Hierarchical SOM. This dynamically growing architecture evolves into a hierarchical structure of self-organizing maps accor...

Analysis of Large-scale Gene Expression Data

The advent of cDNA and oligonucleotide microarray technologies has led to a paradigm shift in biological investigation, such that the bottleneck in research is shifting from data generation to data analysis. Hierarchical clustering, divisive clustering, self-organizing maps and k-means clustering have all been recently used to make sense of this mass of data.

Object Recovery Using Hierarchical Self-Organizing Maps

The self-organizing map’s unsupervised clustering property, is known for classifying high dimensional data sets into clusters that have similar features. Using this property and arranging self-organizing maps into hierarchies, we demonstrate in this paper that legacy code can be potentially broken down into suggested classes using hierarchical self-organizing maps. This is in conjunction with i...

Dynamic self-organizing maps with controlled growth for knowledge discovery

The growing self-organizing map (GSOM) has been presented as an extended version of the self-organizing map (SOM), which has significant advantages for knowledge discovery applications. In this paper, the GSOM algorithm is presented in detail and the effect of a spread factor, which can be used to measure and control the spread of the GSOM, is investigated. The spread factor is independent of t...
